Heurich House Christkindlmarkt

Each December, the Heurich House Museum celebrates the winter season and honors the Heurich family’s German heritage with a holiday artisan market in our garden.

This holiday shopping event features goods from over 40 local artisans from DC, Maryland, and Virginia and a tour of our seasonally decorated historic house.

The Heurich mansion was built by local artisans in 1894: August Grass, a German immigrant and local craftsman, carved the ornate fireplace mantels; local artists painted our ceiling canvases; Baltimore sculptor Hans Schuler made fixtures in the Conservatory. The home is not only a masterpiece of craftsmanship, but the legacy of a small business owner who came to this country with $200 and rose to be the largest non-governmental employer in Washington, DC. 

Because of the story of craftsmanship and entrepreneurship associated with our property, the Heurich House Museum works with local makers throughout the year. The program's annual culmination, Christkindlmarkt, shows off the best of local DC craft entrepreneurship.
